Pomeranian breed is basically a dog of spitz breed type, but is named Pomeranian because it was originated in Pomerania region in North West Poland and North East Germany in Central Europe. He is classed in a toy dog category because of his small and cute size. This dog is descendent to large spitz type dogs and specifically the German spitz. They are also known as zwergspitz ( that means dwarf spitz ).
This has been a choice of number of royal people from a quite long time, Queen Victoria also owned a particularly small Pomeranian which consequently made this small breed variety universally popular. This breed has sturdy and healthy dogs. Their most common health issues are luxating Patella and tracheal collapse. But rarely can also suffer from Alopecia X, a skin condition colloquially known as ‘black skin disease’, This is genetic disease due to which the dog’s skin turns to black and also the dogs lose all or most of their hair.
- Pomeranian dogs are small in size with a weight from 1.36 to 3. 17 kg or 3 to 7 lb and a height of 6 to 7 inches measured from withers.
- They are compact but sturdy dogs with an abundant textured coat.
- The top coat near neck makes there a ruff of fur, and Pomeranians are well known for this trait.
Today, we can see Pomeranians in a variety of colours, like; black, red , white, orange, cream, blue, sable, black and tan, brown and tan, spotted, brindle, and parti, plus combinations of those colours. Most commonly, Pomeranians are found in orange, white/ cream or black colours. A new colour is developed by breeders; merle Pomeranian, a combination of solid base colour and light blue/grey patch which results as a mottled effect. The most common base colours are red/brown and black.
The eyes, nose and paw pad are marshmallow colour, changes parts of the eye to blue and colour of nose and paw pad to become mottled pink and black. They have a dark and thick coat, still grooming is not difficult, but grooming is recommended by breeders to maintain the quality of coat and coat is thick and is shed continuously thus trimming in 1 to 2 months is also required.
Pomeranians are very friendly, lively and playful dogs, they can act aggressive with other dogs or people just to prove themselves. They are very alert and aware of the changes in their environment.
We can expect our Pomeranian to live from 12 to 16 years.
